Challenge yourself & try a new one every month in 2012—these are much more attainable goals than one big resolution.
1. Find a form of exercise you like. it can be dance classes, biking, running, tennis, soccer, even walking; the most important thing is that you enjoy it. If you’re having fun it doesn’t feel like “working out” and you’re more likely to stick with it.
2. Unplug yourself more often. As convenient as social media/cell phones/computers are, they also can be sort of draining. Once and awhile, put your phone on silent and find something quiet to do to give yourself a break.
3. Try a new food every week. More variety is never a bad thing!
4. Procrastinate less. The next time you think “I’ll do it tomorrow,” stop yourself. Most of the time the initial task is only turned into a bigger deal by putting it off—and you’ll feel much better if you can get it out of the way.
5. Read a new type of book. If you typically like romance, try an action novel. Only read fiction? Try a biography. Expanding your literary horizons will make you a more knowledgeable, intelligent person.
6. Donate. Whether this means giving a few extra dollars to a worthy cause like Unicef or spending your time by working in a soup kitchen, every little bit helps.
7. Talk to someone new. Instead of instantly dismissing someone you perceive as different from yourself, strike up a conversation with someone you’ve never talked to before. You may just be surprised that you have a lot in common.
8. Become a cook. Okay, so you probably won’t become a master chef in a year—but so what? Pull out that old cookbook you’ve been ignoring and try hosting a dinner party for your friends. Cooking more often leads to a healthier diet and more appreciation for food.
9. Say “yes” more often. Some of the best experiences come unexpectedly—so try rock climbing or ice skating, even if you think you’re terrible at it or not used to it. You don’t have to be a professional to have fun.
10. Pamper yourself. If you’re the type of person to constantly put everyone else’s needs before your own, once and awhile set aside some time just for you. Light some candles and give yourself an at-home spa experience, or treat yourself to the new pair of shoes you’ve been coveting.
11. Do someone else an unexpected favor. Do the dishes or laundry for your parents without them having to ask, or make dinner for your family. They’ll appreciate the effort, and you’ll feel accomplished, too.
12. Journal. This means something different to everyone—you may write page long entries every day or simply a sentence every week. Either way, writing down your thoughts once and awhile can be cleansing and stress-reducing.
